If your treating physician finds out that you are suffering from mesothelioma, then he will be interested to know the stage at which currently the disease is. It is essential for the treatment of mesothelioma since the medicines and corollaries will vary from stage to stage of the disease. Moreover, he also will like to know exactly to which part of the body the cancer has spread.

Treatment of the disease without exactly identifying the stage could be fatal as the advanced stages may require surgical treatments or very strong medicines that could have reverse affect if administered in the preliminary stages. Conversely, use of light medicines when the disease is fairly advanced may result in fatal consequences for the patient.

This form of cancer could be localized or advanced. If the affect is concentrated only on the originating membrane surface, then the disease will be termed as localized. Otherwise it will be termed as advanced. The advanced form of the mesothelioma cancer will affect several other parts of the body including the lungs, chest and abdominal organs.

Knowing the stages is even more important to identify the epicenter of the disease. The age of the patient, his general health condition and spread of the disease shall be the determinant of the mesothelioma diagnosis and subsequent treatments. Standard treatments for mesothelioma include chemotherapy, radiation treatments, and in more advanced cases, surgery. Sometimes the doctor will combine all these methods of treatments to achieve the best results.
